Damir Sabol, who managed to sell his company Photomath to Google, showed at the AI Weekend that it is very possible to create a globally strong brand in a small country like Croatia. This visionary and serial entrepreneur shared with the audience the most interesting moments of his career, which began at the end of the 90s in the basements of Iskon, one of the first Internet service providers in Croatia, while today he holds the position of Director of Software Engineering at Google.
The Photomath app solves math problems and is currently the third most used mobile generative AI app in the world, right after ChatGPT and Microsoft Edge. To date, it has been downloaded more than 700 million times, although Sabol thought that the application would not have more than 100 thousand downloads.
“My wife believed in Photomath more than I did”, Sabol described how he was skeptical at the beginning of creating the application.
The idea came to him in 2013 while he was solving math problems with his son. At the time, he already had Microblink, which developed solutions for automatic document scanning and digitization, and he thought why not use the same technology to solve mathematics.
“Through all my start-ups, I always tried to solve my own problems”, said Sabol, whose application today solves the mathematical problems of millions of people around the world.
